How to design for calm: six principles

Every element in your interface is spending from the same limited resource: your user's attention. Calm design is about spending that budget wisely. These six principles are the working framework.

1. Whitespace is the only free signal you have

Every element in your UI has an attention cost — a button, a label, a progress indicator, all make a small demand. Whitespace makes none. It groups, separates, and directs the eye without withdrawing anything from the user's attention budget. It is the only element that gives without taking. The temptation to fill available space is the most common way SaaS interfaces accidentally become noisy.

2. Progressive disclosure is a promise, not a trick

The promise: the complexity exists, but you will meet it when you have asked for it. Not before. Command palettes — used by Raycast, Notion, and Linear — are the purest expression of this principle: zero chrome until invoked, the full capability of the product available on request. Advanced functionality should be discoverable without being immediately visible. That distinction — discoverable versus visible — is where most teams get it wrong.

3. Every notification is a withdrawal. Make sure the account can afford it

If the honest answer is no, remove it. Animation earns its place by communicating something — where a panel came from, that a process is running, that an action succeeded. Animation that performs for its own sake is a small, repeated demand on the user's attention that compounds across every session.

5. Colour is your most expensive signal. Use it once per screen

Colour is the loudest thing in your attention budget. Use it more than once per screen and you have created competition rather than hierarchy. In a calm interface, colour has one job per view: directing the eye to the thing that matters most right now. Chrome — toolbars, navigation, controls, structural elements — should be tonally quiet enough that when colour appears, the user knows exactly what it means.
