Dopamine Design vs. Dopamine Loops: Same Word, Opposite Intent

"Dopamine" is the design world's favourite buzzword, and it describes two movements that want opposite things from you. One delights. One extracts. Here's how to tell them apart.

Spend a week reading about design right now and you'll trip over the word "dopamine" a dozen times. It's the label of the moment, stuck onto colour palettes, app mechanics, interior trends and short-form edits alike.

The problem is that it describes two movements that want opposite things from you. One is trying to make you feel something. The other is trying to make you stay. Telling them apart is most of the job.

The version that gives

For about a decade, "good taste" online meant restraint. White space, a muted palette, a clean sans-serif, and as little personality as you could get away with. It was safe, it scaled, and by 2024 it had flattened most of the web into the same polite grey hum.

Dopamine design is the correction. Saturated colour, oversized type, maximalist layouts, motion that actually moves. Brands like Lush, Headspace and Starface lean into it. Sites like Modal turn a scroll into something closer to a feeling. It started as a post-pandemic craving for a bit of joy and hardened into a way for brands to signal confidence and vitality without saying a word.

This version is generous. It exists to delight the person looking at it. You walk away from a good one a little more awake than you arrived. That's the whole point.

The version that takes

Now the other one. Infinite scroll. Pull to refresh. Streaks you feel guilty breaking. The little red dot that exists for no reason except to pull your thumb back. Rewards delivered just unpredictably enough that you check one more time, and then one more.

This is dopamine as engineering, not aesthetics. It borrows the same slot-machine logic casinos have used for a century, and short-form video has turned it into a science. The research is getting harder to wave away: a recent review pooling 71 studies and close to 100,000 people linked heavy short-form video use to measurably weaker cognition, with attention and impulse control taking the biggest hit.

These products are built to keep you, not to delight you. Same word as the colourful, joyful work above. Completely opposite intent.

The neuroscience nobody bothers to check

Here's the twist that makes the whole conversation sharper. Dopamine was never the pleasure chemical. That's pop science, and neuroscientists have been correcting it for years.

Dopamine is the anticipation signal. It fires hardest before the reward, not during it. It's the molecule of wanting, not of having. Researchers like Wolfram Schultz and Joshua Berke showed it tracks the gap between what you expected and what you got, which is how the brain learns what to chase next.

It's also why the trendy idea of a "dopamine detox" is a misnomer. You can't drain a neurotransmitter your brain produces continuously. What people are actually describing is hedonic adaptation: the way your baseline for "normal" stimulation keeps creeping upward until ordinary life starts to feel flat.

Understand that, and both camps look different. The colourful version borrows the word loosely, which is harmless. The loop version exploits the real mechanism precisely. Wanting, not liking, is exactly what keeps a thumb moving. It's also why "we used dopamine colours" is a lazy thing to put in a deck. You've said nothing about whether you gave or you took.

Why this matters more now than it used to

Audiences have changed. People want two things that sound contradictory. They want to feel something, and they refuse to be farmed for it.

You can see it in the rise of "calm" interfaces, now treated as a baseline expectation rather than a trend, on the logic that attention is the scarcest thing anyone has left. You can see it in how fast users now clock manipulation: the cancel-flow that traps you, the fake countdown, the endless dot. Building without those tricks has gone from a nice principle to a competitive edge, and in plenty of markets, a legal requirement.

There's a trap on this side too, worth naming. "Calm" has become a popular coat of paint. A meditation app with soft gradients and gentle haptics is still extractive if the business model underneath only rewards time-on-screen. Soothing aesthetics laid over an engagement machine is not calm design. It's calm-washing. The look becomes the alibi.

A test you can actually use

Strip away the vocabulary and you're left with one honest question for any screen, page or feature you ship.

Does this give the person a feeling, or take their attention?

A quick gut-check before anything goes live:

  • Would the user thank you for this element, or feel played by it?

  • Is the reward for them, or for your retention dashboard?

  • If you explained exactly how it works out loud, would it still feel fair?

  • Does it treat attention as finite, or assume it's free?

Joy is a fine reason to design something. Extraction dressed up as joy is the thing to catch.

The term is scientifically imprecise: you cannot drain or reduce dopamine, which the brain produces continuously regardless of behaviour. What people are actually experiencing is hedonic adaptation — the gradual upward drift in what the brain registers as stimulating — and what a detox period allows is a reset of that baseline, not a change in neurotransmitter levels. The practice can be genuinely useful as a behavioural intervention even though the name misrepresents the neuroscience.

Brands most frequently cited as examples of dopamine design include Lush (maximalist retail environments and product packaging), Headspace (bold illustration and saturated gradients applied to a wellness context), and Starface (high-colour, character-led branding in the skincare category). In interior design, the parallel movement is called dopamine décor and includes clashing colour palettes, oversized furniture, and bold wallpaper used expressively rather than decoratively. What these examples share is a deliberate rejection of visual neutrality in favour of emotional presence — the design communicates confidence and vitality without relying on copy to do it.

A systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 71 studies and approximately 98,300 participants found that heavy short-form video use was associated with measurably weaker cognitive performance, with attention and impulse control showing the largest effects. The research does not prove that short-form video causes cognitive decline — correlation and causation are difficult to separate in behavioural studies of this kind — but the scale of the pooled sample and the consistency of the direction of effect have made the findings difficult to dismiss. The mechanism most frequently proposed is that variable-reward content trains the brain to expect rapid stimulation, raising the threshold for sustained attention in lower-stimulation contexts.

Calm-washing is the practice of applying soothing visual aesthetics — soft gradients, gentle animation, low-contrast palettes — to a product whose underlying mechanics are still extractive. A wellness app that uses calming design language while its business model rewards time-on-screen is an example: the aesthetics function as an alibi for mechanics that would be criticised if they were visually honest about their intent. Calm-washing is a subset of the broader category of ethics-washing in technology design, where visual or verbal language signals values the product does not embody. The tell is usually in the business model, not the colour palette.

A design element is manipulative if it exploits the user's attention rather than rewarding it. A practical test: ask whether the user would thank you for the element if they understood exactly how it worked, whether the reward it delivers is for the user or for a retention dashboard, whether explaining it aloud would make it feel fair, and whether it treats the user's attention as finite or assumes it is free. Specific patterns consistently associated with manipulation include notification badges with no informational value, countdown timers that reset or are fabricated, cancel flows designed to confuse, and pull-to-refresh mechanics that rarely deliver anything new. Some of these patterns are now being treated as legally questionable under European consumer protection frameworks, not merely ethically questionable.
